The Ventromedial Prefrontal Cortex
First, it is our claim that a definite structure within the brain increases activity whenever reframing is performed, and that this structure is the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC). We often call this the "appraisal center" of the brain. The vmPFC is a structure deep within the prefrontal cortex, which is the part of the brain that controls executive function.
Known roles of the vmPFC
Per the scientific literature, the vmPFC is a multifaceted structure with three distinct but interrelated functions:
- First is the encoding of expected reward and punishment. When considering a potential action, the vmPFC's role is to provide an emotional "simulation" of the consequences of that action. Someone considering a choice may feel, in a very literal way, the joy or the embarrassment that would come from a choice.
